The OligoScan is developed to determine the bioavailability of minerals and trace elements and the degree of intoxication by toxic metals.
A blood test only shows what is currently circulating.
A hair analysis reflects the situation of the last three to six months.
Urine contains only those water-soluble elements that can be excreted. In a normal urine sample toxic metals are hardly established because these are dumped into the tissues, as soon as they enter the blood.
A urine test after challenging (provocation test) is, however very useful to determine whether toxic metals can be excreted in this manner.

The measurement is carried out according to the Beer-Lambert law. Every substance absorbs and emits light of a particular wavelength range.
The more concentrated a substance is, the more light is absorbed. This enables a quantitative analysis.
Spectrophotometry is already being used for years in laboratories, chemistry, biology and industry.
Several comparing studies have been conducted in different centers; other trials are still running. The OligoScan has been compared to traditional tests such as hair analysis, blood examination and urine tests. But it must be realized that the OligoScan is a completely different test, because it measures at the tissue level. So in many cases rather big differences are seen between the results of the OligoScan and other tests. However, there are some very significant correlations. When the OligoScan determines a high load of, for example, mercury and silver (amalgam), then these metals are not or just slightly increased in other tests. That is logical. A load is with toxic metals at the tissue level (intracellular) is not detected in urine, even after provocation. A blood sample or urine test can only show what is present in the extracellular environment.
In Belgium, many studies have been done correlating the OligoScan with all kinds of tests on hormones and metabolites in blood and urine. It has been shown, that a high content of the trace element boron (B) indicates a disruption of estrogen metabolsim. There are more correlations.
