Metals can be distinguished in essential and non-essential elements.

The essential elements include the minerals calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium that are present in high concentrations in our body. The number of essential trace elements is greater, but these occur only in small amounts. These include zinc, copper, iron, manganese, cobalt, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium and lithium.

There is also a group of essential metalloids which have properties of both metals and non-metals. Examples include selenium, silicon, boron and germanium.

The group of the essential non-metals include phosphorus, sulfur and iodine.

A copper deficiency leads to anemia that often goes unnoticed because in most cases only iron levels are checked. But an excess of copper or iron can be as disruptive to metabolism as a deficiency. Copper and iron are transition metals which in excess generate, too much oxygen, nitrogen or carbonyl radicals (ROS, RNS, RCS) .

This radical-genereative effect is also caused by the non-essential or toxic, heavy metals in even smaller quantities. These include aluminum, silver, barium, beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, mercury, nickel, platinum, lead, thallium, and thorium. There are also toxic metalloids, such as antimony and arsenic.
